Here’s Why Less is More For Your Locs

2–3 minutes

It’s normal to want do a lot when you first start anything. First time moms, first apartment, first car…you tend to buy a lot that you don’t necessarily need to get the job done. But overtime you understand all you need is the essentials to truly take care of what you have.

When starting locs, there are only a handful of products you’ll need to maintain healthy locs. Here we’re going to discuss why less is more and the advantages of it.

Less Build-Up

One of the worst problems we deal with when it comes to locs is build-up. We’ve seen it before, a bunch of gunk just sitting at the top of our roots, and even sometimes lodged in the middle of the loc itself, EW! It’s not a pretty sight to see but it’s normal and can be fixed.

The main cause of build-up is how much product you’re using. You only need about 2 products max when retwisting your locs. Using a pea size amount of product for each loc is all you really need. The real magic in retwisting is the technique, that is what results in a neat retwist that will last you for weeks. Check out my YouTube video for 2 tips that will guarantee a neat retwist every time using NO gel!

Less Flakes

Most people assume more product = helping the problem when in reality it’s making it worse. Overusing products, especially the wrong types, will result in extreme dryness which leads to excessive flakes. Curating a routine of essentials only and sticking to it will transform your hair and scalp within just a few weeks.

To oil your scalp, you only need to do so 3 times a week, even if you deal with scalp conditions. It may seem backwards but over-oiling is the #1 cause of flakes. When oiling your scalp, you also want to make sure moisture is present to ensure the oil is absorbing correctly and not just sitting on the surface.

Less Breakage

Styling your locs every retwist is fun and all but at what cost? I know we may get bored of our locs and want to spruce things up but we have to take into consideration the damage these styles can bring when overdone.

Taking breaks from styling throughout retwists, at least every 1-2 months, will help keep your locs thick from root to tip. Irregular locs, (thick at the top, skinny in the middle, and thick at the bottom), thinning edges, and all other breakage issues are mainly caused by excessive styling. Be sure to spread out your style ideas to maintain the health of your locs.

Less Worry

Locs are super easy to manage and doesn’t require much mental work. Finding what works for you, curating a routine, and sticking to it will lead you on an effortless loc journey. When things get too complex, think more simple and remember what’s essential.

Remember everyone’s journey is different, so always do what’s best for you and continue to flourish with your locs!
